Grand Solo

for guitar transcribed for orchestra

Arranged and Orchestrated by Benjamin Bates for Surrey Hills Orchestra, 2019

This piece was transcribed for Surrey Hills Orchestra from a facsimile of an early published edition

by Meissonier in about 1822. This sonata, opus 14, was written by Fernando Sor in his Spanish

period, however the date of composition (earlier than 1810) is not known and the original

manuscript is yet to be found in Spain*. Sor’s works are often performed by guitarists today as part

of university syllabuses. Benjamin Bates (the orchestrator) performed this piece in the final

performance of his bachelor of music degree at Northern Territory University in 2004. This piece,

although originally written for Surrey Hills Orchestra, is suited to a community orchestra with

players of varying standards, particularly with a number of solos in the woodwind.
